Coles Bay & Freycinet National Park

Our campground at Friendly Beaches is part of Freycinet National Park.  The visitor centre for the park is in Coles Bay.  We wanted to do one of the hikes so we went into Coles Bay to get some more info.  What a pretty view!  It was overcast and the peaks were covered in clouds. I was so thrilled to see this albatross Pacific Gull, but since then I’ve seen many.  He’s gorgeous against these rocks. I spooked him a little … Read More

Camping at Friendly Beaches

After Bicheno we travelled down the east coast of Tasmania to Freycinet National Park.  We made it down the dirt road with our caravan and we were greeted with this lovely view of the ocean.  There aren’t a lot of spaces in this campground that would suit a large van, we were lucky to get there when we did.  Camping here was free with a national parks pass and a ranger came around at one point to check that we … Read More

Douglas-Apsley National Park, Tasmania

When you are doing a trip like this with kids you have to pick and choose what walks you do.  If it was just the two of us we’d do more, I’m sure.  But with the kids we have to choose carefully.  Balance a long walk with a couple of short ones.  Hard, steep walks with easy ones.  This was a short, easy walk with a waterhole at the end. JitterBug spied this log and started bouncing on it, marvelling … Read More

Bay of Fires, Tasmania: part three!

Yep, more pictures.  Here’s parts one and two.  The next time we went to the beach it was sunny.  So beautiful! I came across this sand castle that some other family must have made. That’s Dad with TurboBug on the rock, watching the waves. TurboBug was cuddling close because of the wind.  Before I took this a giant wave crashed right next to them and the spray went higher than them. The riptide was so, so strong.  We didn’t let … Read More

Sawpit Camping Area

From our travels in December… Such a great spot in the forest.  This free camp is just outside Heywood, Victoria.  It’s a busy place, and you can see why, barely off the main road and you feel like you’re miles from everything.  There was an awesome thunderstorm there our first night that came in as the sun was setting.  The result was a lovely orange colour in the sky, everything looked like it was glowing.  Beautiful.  We miss those Arkansas … Read More

tower hill reserve

There’s a fantastic wildlife reserve near Warrnambool, Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve.  It’s a great place to see several Aussie animals at once and do some short walks as well.  We did the peak climb when we got there, which is a bit strenuous since it’s so steep.  The kids were doing all the classic complaining all the way up, I was trying not to laugh too hard.  It’s not a long hike at all. ‘But my legs are soooo tired.’ … Read More
