Australian Butterfly Sanctuary in Kuranda (Cairns)

While we were in Cairns we drove up to Kuranda.  Actually I should say we drove back up to Kuranda, since we’d driven by on our way into town.  It’s up in the mountains and it’s a gorgeous little tourist town.  The big attraction is taking a skyrail or train up to the town, but unfortunately that was too pricey for us.  (We decided to spend our money on visiting the Great Barrier Reef instead!)  Because of the skyrail, Kuranda … Read More

All those historic sites in Cooktown

Cooktown is as far north as we made it on Cape York.  This is about as far as the bitumen goes.  I was expecting to see a town that catered to 4WD adventures and such, but instead it felt very much like many other small Aussie towns.  Lots of historic sites in Cooktown.  This is a fountain in memoriam of Mary Watson, the very definition of irony since she died from lack of water after an Aboriginal attack. This one … Read More

Black Mountain & Keatings Lagoon

Not too far from Cooktown are a couple of mountains covered in heaps and heaps of black rocks.  It looks like at some point in the past it must have rained black rocks all over these mountains.  It’s named…are you ready? Black Mountain National Park.  Because, you know, the mountains look black. You can’t really hike the mountain, you can only observe it from the lookout.  Underneath all those rocks there can be gaps and people have been injured in … Read More

Bluff Point Walk in Mulambin, QLD

Is this not the prettiest kookaburra ever?  He looks so soft and fluffy.  🙂 While in Mulambin we did the Bluff Point walk.   We’d read you could get a 360 degree view of the area and see turtles swimming in the ocean.  Sounds good! The trail does a circuit and we soon found out it’s one of those popular fitness tracks.  You can choose your direction and do the steep part first or last.  We opted to do the steep … Read More

A Bike Ride on the Beach in Mulambin, QLD

Jumping ahead again! Emu crossing!  Yay!  We soon found out why… The caravan park had its own resident emu!  He was not shy and often came over when he saw us outside.  He wasn’t afraid of the kids at all, he probably knew they were likely to have food. This is officially my favourite kind of palm.  It’s like the branches are in 3D.  I think it’s a foxtail palm. We went across the road to have a bike ride … Read More

Dorrigo National Park

While we were in Coffs Harbour we drove over to Dorrigo National Park.  We’d heard that there was a walk you could do where you get to walk behind a waterfall.  Doesn’t that sound fun?  Something to remember.  On the drive up there were other waterfalls to see.  In fact, part of the drive is called Waterfall Way. The visitor centre was quite nice with a cute shop and cafe. There’s a terrific lookout behind the visitor centre, the Skywalk … Read More
