Road Tripping: Alice Springs

Between Yulara and Alice Springs we stopped in Erldunda to refuel.  There’s supposed to be a Big Thing there, a Big Echidna.  When I asked about it at the petrol station they had no clue what I was talking about at first.  Finally they realised what I was asking about and they told me it had been ruined by mice and the like.  It used to be where their emu farm is now.  We were happy to see the emus.  … Read More

Life in a Caravan: Longreach

In Longreach we stayed at a very busy caravan park. No grass in sight which is common for much of this part of Australia!  The first night we were there we were very lucky to be approached by a pair of brolgas.  I was fascinated.  They weren’t shy and were obviously hoping for a handout.  They approached several people and were not afraid to come right up to us.  They are so big!  It’s so strange to have these creatures … Read More

Breakfast With the Birds

One morning during our stay in Rubyvale, Dad walked outside and attempted to enjoy a mandarin.  He was suddenly assaulted by rainbow lorikeets who apparently like mandarins!  We all came out to have a look and we soon gathered a good number of them. TurboBug really wanted to hold the birds but wasn’t too keen on it when it happened.  A bit of panicking but he was fine once we coaxed the bird away. LadyBug found them a bit scratchy … Read More

Sunrise With the Wallabies at Cape Hillsborough NP

Just north of Mackay is Cape Hillsborough National Park where the wallabies come down to the beach at sunrise every morning, what a sight!  They don’t seem to mind people watching them eat their breakfast and it makes for such a memorable morning. We stepped onto the beach and saw wallabies off in the distance.  We made our way down there and got there just as a man walked out onto the beach dropping food for them as he went.  … Read More

Platypus Viewing at Eungella

Finally it was the right time of day for platypus viewing!  They are active at dawn and dusk.  We headed to the township of Eungella where the Broken River has three viewing areas.  It was a popular spot. The first creatures we saw were turtles.  We even saw a tiny baby turtle but he didn’t show up in my pictures.  The kids were excited to see turtles after our recent turtle feeding experience. Later in our walk I found this … Read More

Sky Window Lookout in Eungella National Park

As we made our way from Finch Hatton Gorge to Eungella we stopped at the Sky Window Lookout, we’d heard that on a clear day you can see all the way back to Mackay.  Given that we were an hour from the coast it sounded like the view would be stunning.  It’s also popular for bird viewing, though we were too noisy that afternoon to have much hope of seeing many. The lookout is a short loop with a couple … Read More
