Standley Chasm

There’s much to see in the MacDonnell Ranges near Alice Springs, we spent a day visiting only some of the closer attractions.  Some of us were still recovering from our round of gastro and we didn’t want a huge day in the car.  I snapped a few pictures from the car as the scenery changed.  Our first stop was Standley Chasm.  It’s on private land owned by the Iwupataka Land Trust, so there is an entrance fee which we paid … Read More

Bike Ride Around Uluru

The trail at the base of Uluru is about 10.5km long.  There was no way we were going to be able to walk that with all of our kids, so we opted to take our bikes.  The trail is not at all strenuous and most people we saw that day were walking with just a few others on bikes.  The kids were anxious to touch Uluru, they’d been asking if they’d be able to before we even got there.  So … Read More

A Walk in Kata-Tjuta

After Tennant Creek we drove to Alice Springs, where we spent just one night before moving on to Yulara, near Uluru (aka Ayer’s Rock).  We decided we’d spend time in Alice after we’d visited Uluru. The distances are incredible.  There’s just nothing out here.  See this?  In 124 km we need to turn left onto Uluru Road.  It’s about 450km from Alice to Yulara with only tiny towns and a couple of petrol stations along the way.  With nothing in … Read More

The Pebbles Near Tennant Creek

We spent several nights in Tennant Creek, we needed to catch up on laundry and just stay put for a couple of days.  While we were there we visited the Pebbles, the aboriginal name is Kunjarra.  There’s about six kilometres of unsealed road on the way there.  Look how red the dirt is! There’s a path winding through the Pebbles, and due to the sacredness of the site you are supposed to stay on the trail and not climb the … Read More

Cape Hillsborough: A Walk with Butterflies

The morning we went to Cape Hillsborough to watch the sunrise we also stopped at the Diversity Boardwalk.  I had read it was a short walk and worth doing, but we might not have stopped if it weren’t for the butterflies.  We were sleepily happily driving along, wondering about all the mangroves we were seeing,  and suddenly there were butterflies everywhere.  This was an easy walk, about 1.2km, a forty-minute loop through woodland, mangroves, and eucalypts.  The first section had … Read More

Platypus Viewing at Eungella

Finally it was the right time of day for platypus viewing!  They are active at dawn and dusk.  We headed to the township of Eungella where the Broken River has three viewing areas.  It was a popular spot. The first creatures we saw were turtles.  We even saw a tiny baby turtle but he didn’t show up in my pictures.  The kids were excited to see turtles after our recent turtle feeding experience. Later in our walk I found this … Read More
