Billabong Sanctuary: An Australian Wildlife Experience

One of my favourite stops on our trip so far was the Billabong Sanctuary in Townsville.  It’s a unique zoo experience, full of Aussie animals with scheduled talks and hands-on sessions throughout the day.  When we arrived we headed straight for the cassowaries where the ranger talk had already started.  There are two cassowaries and we were lucky to be able to feed them grapes! Cassowaries are the third largest bird in the world, behind the ostrich and emu.  They … Read More

Australian Venom Zoo in Kuranda (Cairns)

When we were trying to find BatReach in Kuranda we walked by the Australian Venom Zoo.  We were accosted invited to come inside and have a look.  Of course the kids were dying to go in.  JitterBug especially was begging, and SkeeterBug wanted to also.  LadyBug could take it or leave it, mostly leave it.   First they send you downstairs for a look at the snakes and a few other creatures.  These snakes are among the most deadliest in Australia.  … Read More

Australian Butterfly Sanctuary in Kuranda (Cairns)

The Koala Hospital at Port Macquarie

Every afternoon at the Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie they give a ‘Walk & Talk’ tour about the koalas while they are being fed.  Sounded like the perfect time to visit so we headed there one afternoon during our stay in the area.  In my head I was picturing some kind of indoor hospital with separate rooms and viewing windows.  So wrong!  All the koalas are outside in separate enclosures.  The trees in each enclosure are carefully separated from any … Read More

Werribee Zoo

Another almost current post!  While we were in Geelong a couple of weeks ago we made the trip up to Werribee Zoo.  Our zoo memberships were expiring and we had never been to this zoo. I couldn’t resist taking pictures of these cute road signs in the parking lot.  How often do you see a giraffe crossing sign? Then there were various animals in each section to help you remember where you parked. Give us a kiss! Watch out for … Read More
