Mindil Beach Sunset Market

A must in Darwin is to visit the sunset market at Mindil Beach.  It’s held twice a week but everyone told us the Thursday night market was the one to attend.  It’s so popular that it can be difficult to find parking so we opted to park at the [huge] casino next door and walk over.  The market is right next to the beach so everyone gathers on the beach to watch the sunset and then hits the market to … Read More

Bruny Island Berry Farm

A flashback from Tasmania last March when we were on Bruny Island.  There’s a map in this post that shows where we were. There are a few berry picking farms in Tasmania, enough that there’s even a lovely tourist brochure highlighting them all for you. We decided to save our berry picking adventures for Bruny Island where we visited…are you ready?…the aptly named Bruny Island Berry Farm.  This could possibly be the best berry farm location ever.  Right across from … Read More

Sunrise With the Wallabies at Cape Hillsborough NP

Just north of Mackay is Cape Hillsborough National Park where the wallabies come down to the beach at sunrise every morning, what a sight!  They don’t seem to mind people watching them eat their breakfast and it makes for such a memorable morning. We stepped onto the beach and saw wallabies off in the distance.  We made our way down there and got there just as a man walked out onto the beach dropping food for them as he went.  … Read More

Townsville Lagoons: Free Swimming All Year Round!

The Strand in Townsville boasts a waterpark at one end and a seawater lagoon at the other.  We visited the waterpark first (no pictures) and the kids loved it because it had one of those huge buckets that dump freezing cold lovely refreshing water on you every couple of minutes.  We also made a visit to the Rock Pool, an enclosed lagoon of ocean water that is filtered continually.  This means you can swim in the salty ocean water without … Read More

Etty Bay on the QLD Coast

In northern Queensland these are a common sight at the beaches.  Vinegar to apply in case of jellyfish stings.  Fortunately for us, winter is not the high season for stingers.  They can still be around but generally you can hit the beach without too much worry. This far north you also have to be on the lookout for crocodiles.  They don’t care if it’s winter or not!  See the map below?  We are between Cairns and Townsville at the moment.  … Read More

Cairns Esplanade & The Fig Tree Playground

Cairns was lovely.  The weather was perfect.  A tropical paradise to us Victorians.  They even have a free swimming lagoon which we had to visit.  We started all the way at one end of the esplanade.  Because we also had to visit the fig tree playground.  A playground built around a huge tree?  Definitely worth a visit. Some perspective.  See that bit of yellow and red and blue?  That’s my kids. There.  There they are. Heaps of playing and climbing … Read More
